The sprained ankle is without doubt the most frequent traumatic pathology concerning without distinction the sportsman of leisure and the professional sportsman. It represents about 5 000 cases treated every day in Great-Britain,23 000 in the United States and 6 000 in France.

It's been noted that complications concerning this pathology have considerably increased in recent years with, in particular, chronic instability resulting in repetative episodes of more or less serious sprains.

Therefore a solution had to be found in addition to the traditional re-education to limit these accidents and to shorten the time of recovery. During the sports activities, the ankle and the foot are subjected to all kinds of stress during which these articulations must react as quickly as possible to obtain a perfect stability.

This capacity to react quickly is called the proprioceptivity

The purpose of these plates is to reinforce the proprioceptive system of these articulations with an innovative concept. Given the great number of bones, ligaments and muscles, it seemed interesting to dissociate the front foot from the back foot during proprioceptive work, as the motion of the foot is never straightforward but relies on a combination of all the small articulations.

The PROPRIOFOOT is a set of four plates that can be distinguished by their colour and their base and that are 10 cm long. They are used by pair, allowing a great number of combinations while respecting a certain progression in the difficulty.

They have several advantages:

- They are the only tools which allow one to dissociate the front foot from the back foot.

- Their weak angular displacement makes it possible to target work on the ankle and on the foot by limiting the action of the cerebellar system and the inner ear (responsible for body balance).

- Their small size and their ease of use allow an efficient self re-education in any circumstance, while diminishing the immobilisation after a sprain

Therefore their role is both preventive and curative. They will become the essential tool to all sportsmen and physiotherapists anxious to take an active part in the improvement of the techniques and the protocols of proprioception.
